McCarter Theatre

This show was built in our shop and was a co-production with Second Stage Theatre in New York.
The back and side walls were made of a fake fox fur that were sewed together in to 3 panels.  The upstage and stage right panels hung on a batten and were stretched to the floor.  The Stage left wall was a framed wall and covered by the fur because objects were thrown at the wall and it had to make noise.
The snow bank was made up of numerous pieces because it had to load in at Second Stage which was limited sized load in doorways.  No piece could be wider than 2'.  All the platforms which you can see below were individually covered in pink foam, carved.  Then a softer padded foam was applied to each individual piece.  After it was loaded in and bolted together a huge piece of poodle fabric was stretched over it.
The snow bank did have to accommodate functioning steps, numerous trees, a bar, and a tunnel space which all had to be built in.
There were 10 birch trees in this show.  To fabricate these trees I took 1/4" rod and bent numerous rings of different diameters.  These rings would be held together by 5 rods that traversed up the tree.  Heights varied from 22'- 24'.  Along the way up the tree each rod had to be bent slightly in order to match the rough sketches I was given.  After the main frame was done, I then added the branches.  Construction was of a similar fashion. Next flanges were welded in to the base of the trees so that pipe could pass through to make the trees more rigid.
As soon as the welding was done, each tree was wrapped in a screen mesh, covered with cloth, textured, and painted.  The last step was an appliqué of  some sort that made it look like ice had frozen on the trees.
